Over the summer of 2025, I interned at Mavericks in Motion, a South Korea–based wellness startup. As the sole designer in the early stage, I led product design and content strategy for ROL, a community-driven routine-building app, focusing on user acquisition through engagement-driven design while conducting pre-launch QA and iterative refinements to improve usability and retention.

As an early-stage startup with a limited user base, acquiring new users was important. However, we realized that the lack of engagement-driven features was the primary barrier to user acquisition.

2 Different Approaches: Onboarding and Justification
Although there were other solutions for user acquisition, we focused on connecting users within community pages, because social relevance and peer validation are stronger drivers of engagement than standalone features.
APPROACH

Approach 1 focuses on collecting users’ interests through community onboarding and delivering more personalized information

Approach 2 is about including justification taglines on post to motivate engagement with community posts

Existing mobile apps’ onboarding pages commonly include progress bars, use icons or images alongside labels to give users immediate visual feedback, and feature welcoming language that encourages users to complete the onboarding process rather than skip it.
Based on this competitor analysis, I decided to incorporate a progress bar, icons, and welcoming microcopy into ROL’s onboarding experience.

While the onboarding page validated the use of icon-based chips and a dot-style progress indicator, the lack of clear selection states reduced usability. Working on ROL taught me how to approach early-stage product design in a startup environment where resources are limited. By connecting onboarding with personalized routines and community engagement, I learned how a user-centered perspective can reinforce motivation and drive repeated use. Also, the fast-paced startup environment pushed me to iterate quickly, rather than wait for perfect solutions. Through close collaboration with developers and PM, I also learned how a design system can reduce rework and enable more effective, consistent designs.
